POSITION DESCRIPTION: LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSE
DEPARTMENT: NURSING

REPORTS TO: MANAGER, NURSING SERVICES
ROLE SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Manager of Nursing Services, Licensed Practical Nurse positions are at Full Scope. Licensed Practical Nurses: act as the Team Leader for their shift on their assigned floor, supervise Resident Care Aides and other designated staff; participate fully as a member of the Interdisciplinary Team; direct work assignments; perform a role in the fire and emergency preparedness as outlined in the Emergency Response Plan; participate in employee and student performance evaluation, training and orientation; perform nursing treatments and procedures; perform resident care duties; and administer medications.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervises Resident Care Aides and other designated staff by acting as a team leader: directing work assignments; updating treatments, care plans, and nursing communication tools on an ongoing basis, communicating appropriately with residents’ family members.
- Performs nursing procedures such as: catheterizations; applying and changing sterile dressings and/or non-sterile dressings; colostomy care and irrigation; taking and recording blood pressure; administration of routine and PRN medications including performing sub-cutaneous and intra-muscular injections; suppositories and/or enemas; taking temperatures, pulse and/or respirations; admissions and transfers of residents.
- Records and charts medication administration; resident observations: objective and subjective symptoms; problems, changes, and/or concerns; and reports to the Registered Nurse.
- Collaborates with the Registered Nurse and provides input in formulating, implementing and evaluating nursing care plans for residents.
- Participates in nursing department audits; inventory control, interdisciplinary referrals, under the direction of the Manager of Nursing Services.
- Provides personal care to residents; assists residents with meals; transports residents within the facility and provides assistance as required.
- Works cooperatively with other staff and departments to ensure resident care needs, including dietary and activation program needs, are met.
- Communicates effectively with other department staff concerning resident status.
- Attends relevant committee meetings such as: Medication Safety, Occupational Health and Safety, Team Meetings and Nurses Meetings, Infection Control, and in-service programs.
- Provides input to Quality Improvement initiatives as required.
- Chairs Care Conferences for assigned residents and prepares/collects all relevant information to conduct review.
- Participates in employee and student performance evaluation, training and orientation.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
- Current B.C. Practical Nurse License including Full Scope of Practice capability.
- One year’s recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Compensation
$32.84 - $41.35 per hour
